Ford recalls 2011-2012 Ford Fusion, Taurus, Flex, Lincoln MKZ and Mercury Milan vehicles over potential failure of electric power steering assist systems

Ford Motor

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Ford Fusion vehicles without a 3.5L engine and Lincoln MKZ hybrid electric vehicles, 2011 Mercury Milan vehicles, 2011-2012 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT vehicles equipped with a 3.5L GTDI engine and 2013 Ford Taurus, Ford Flex, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT vehicles equipped with any available engine. The affected vehicles have electric power steering assist systems that may shut down as a result of a steering motor sensor fault.

If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

Approximately 393,623 vehicles are affected by the recall.

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will check the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). If dealers find any loss of steering assist DTCs, the steering gear will be replaced, free of charge. If, no codes are found during the PSCM inspection, the PSCM software will be updated, free of charge.

My fusion has been having several issues including a corrosion of the battery and connectors. I had this problem fixed and bought a new battery and with in weeks the corrosion started taking place again causing my vehicle to turn off and stall in traffic.

I am also getting a nevr ending low tire pressure warning which I read is the beginning of the steering issue. I amscared to drive with my kids :(

Ahhh include F150's (2011, 12, 13, 15) in that recall...!!! They DID recall exact same for 2014....!!!! I'm 73 y/o & cannot handle loss of power steering nor financially fix it. Thank the Lord my son was driving when it occurred. It's now setting in driveway & I'm seriously considering trading it. Will NEVER own electric steering again. Read forums & some owners have had the problem "repaired" numerous times. This is expensive when not under warranty....!!! CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT...!!!

I have a 2008 ford escape that had a recall on it. After I took it in to the local Ford dealership, my car started having problems relating to the recall. After taking it to two different ford companies and proving that the recall fix did not work and is causing problems, ford refuses to authorize the other repairs that is covered under the recall, because one repair shop did the initial update. Now my car is having major problems, and I cannot afford to fix it. It is a safety issue. I have talked to 5 different people about the issue at ford but they keep saying that the case number I provide the dealership should take care of it however it does not. Im a single mother of 3 with low income and if my cars power steering goes out at a crucial time I could potentially cause a serious accident.

2012 Fusion, power steering/advance trac errors followed by loas of power steering. Recall was performed, replaced steering gear. Problem came back 100 miles later. Told me control arms were bad. Not coversed by Ford. Spent $700 on new control arms, problem came back 140 miles later accompanied by a seriously awful grinding sound. Dealer won't help.

I was driving to work and as I pulled off into a subdivision to go back home for something my steering wheel would stop turning. This is a rack pinion problem. Called Allan Vigil Ford in Georgia. Described the problem. No mention of recall. Calling warranty company today

Rack and Pinion in 2013 Ford Taurus Limited. Cost estimate is $1600. This needs to be fixed. Called Ford and they state that this is not under recall or warranty. This is an ongoing problem for Ford and needs to be corrected

2012 Ford Fusion 2.5L I4. Electric Power steering failure and advanced trac failure all at once with no prior signs of damage or warning. Was told that the lower control arm binded up causing the failure, but that the lower control arm would not be covered by the EPAS Recall. Repair quoted at $1250.

My son and I almost lost our lives today during to the power steering error message happening while I was going about 60mph on the interstate. I had no steering control, and the car was veering , all by itself into someone else's lane. I was scared out of my mind. I lost Ltd all control. I slowed down as best as I could, and was Blessed to finally vertical enough to the right shoulder and come to a complete stop. As I got home I found there was a recall. When attempting to take the vehicle in for them to fix the issue, I get another error messages Service advance Trac Error, and Brake System seemed to malfunction, along with the steering issue. Car could not break properly, causing accident of us ramming into the back of another vehicle

I was on my way to work and sitting in traffic, when traffic finally picked up and I was able to go a good speed right then my lights games on saying "Service Advance Trac Error" and something along the message of Power steering failure. This is the second time that I have had to pay for a two truck (the difference anyways) to come and pick up my car because of this error. Thank god my part has a lifetime warranty on it but my money doesn't. They need to recall all these vehicles Im tired of dealing with this. I love my car but the problems are Fords fault and they refuse to address it.

This car nearly killed me and my friend. Caused a major accident on the freeway and injured my passenger. Don't know why car went into a left front dipping skid while in a turn, sliding me into freeway traffic stream.

I'm having this same issue for nearly a year now. I've serviced my vehicle at the Ford dealership and each time they mentioned my make/model vehicle is under a recall but my VIN # is not. This will be my 5th time having to bring it in for this damn Advance Trac power steering. Last time, Ford dealership told me that my tires needed to be changed to correct this which I've done 3 other times. Tired of having to continue putting $$ into a vehicle that no longer functions as I once bought it. Is there any thing that can be done to get this fixed or even replace my vehicle because at this point, I'm done with Fords period. Please someone let me know because I have only one car between my wife and I, and I'm the only one that has the power to drive it like this.

My 2011 F-150 has the same condition, if this is a common problem with this system why only recall certain vehicles, in my opinion they need to check every single one of them for safety precautions.

I bought a 2012 Ford Fusion 30days ago. Power steering assist fault came on. I found there is a recall on the steering gear. Ford said steering gear needs replacing. But won't honor recall cause my car has 154,000 miles.. I'm so upset . If I had more money I would of gotten a new car. I know this car is used. But Ford should still honor the 10yrs u have to get the recall fixed instead of saying no cause ur over 150,000 miles

Having the same problem. Power steering went out 2 years ago amd we took it in. They said it needed to be updated and that fixed the problem. Then last week, almost 2 years to the day the power steering goes out as we were driving. We take it to the dealership and they say the rack needs to be repaired and it's 2500.00. If this is an on-going problem why hasn't ford issued a recall??

2012 fusion. Bought AFTER the recall but dealer didn't fix it before selling (I didn't know til later). 12/16 power steering goes out with all the warning lights. Dealer in IN fixed recall and steering gear recall. 6 months later I was 500 miles from home in NC when it went out again on the interstate (same warnings lights). My CPO warranty was 900 miles expired, and had to stay overnight. Ford said they replaced power steering system again. I found out later they didn't read and address all the DTC codes as they should've (to find out what was really going on). 4 hours later (about 200 miles away) in SC it all went out AGAIN! The next Ford dealership kept it a week and said it was due to a service bulletin fault where friction in lower control arms messes up the power steering. Paid $800 cash to fix bc Ford won't take fault.
Then Ford said they would reimburse half the repair cost and hotel cost; said I'd have the check in 3 weeks. That was a year ago and never got the check.
Now my lower control arm needs replaced, only a year later. I will find out tomorrow if Ford will replace it bc of parts warranty or make me pay.
Ford finance also told me my finance company insisted I had to buy a $2500 extended comprehensive warranty that would pay for almost any repairs within the first 7 years. When I went to use it I found out it was only until I hit 100,000 miles (purchased car at 72,000), which was the exact same terms as my CPO warranty. I could NEVER even use that $2500 warranty. Theres proof they forged the documents to make me think it lasted longer.
I WANT to use for all this but it happened in 3 different states so not sure how.
