Lawyers have opened an investigation into Ford Edge and Flex vehicles over defects with the vehicle’s Power Transfer Units

Ford Motor

Ford-Logo

Hundreds of consumers have complained of Power Transfer Unit (PTU) fluid leaks that often result in the premature failure of the PTU and necessitate a costly replacement.

On All-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, the PTU is responsible for transferring power from the output shaft of the transmission to the front wheels and also to the rear drive shaft. The PTU units contain a modest amount of fluid which is subject to overheating and degrading the valve seals.

If you have a Ford Flex or Edge and experienced a problem with the PTU on that vehicle we would like to hear from you. You may contact us privately using the contact attorney privately box below and/or share your story publicly using the submit button.

I have a 2014 Ford Focus and my vehicle has been in the shop 17 times. Ihave had computer after computer updates, 2 internal clutch and an oil leak on the right side of my transmission that had to be fixed. I have had atleast 5 different Customer Service Managers at Ford in which have all been very rude and unprofessional. the responce that I get from them is that they will give me the number to the BBB and I can file a complaint. My focus is STILL not fixed and I am still having the transmission issues and my car shutters and shifts very hard. I have asked Ford several times to do a buy back on my vehicle and I they have denied me every times. I do feel like my 2014 Ford Focus is a LEMON and I would like to get out of the car.

I need to replace the PTU on my 2008 Lincoln MKZ- Dealer estimate to repair is $1700. Is this an ongoing issue? What has Lincoln done to help those affected after the warranty runs out?
Was there a recall? What action can a consumer take?

I have a 2007 Lincoln MKX and have had so much trouble with this! First heard noise so changed real hub but still heard noise after repair, then two weeks later the driveshaft broke that cost me 600$ about a month later wife was driving 70 on highway and said it felt like she slammed the brakes but didn't! Had it taken to the shop and was told ptu/transfer case exploded and split in two which dropped the new driveshaft and broke it and cracked went all the way around and hit the transmission!! So, since I still owe money on this pos and it's not worth what I owe, I'm stuck!
Repair bill... 3700$ plus another 600$-900$ for yet another driveshaft!
Somebody owes me something!
Sincerely, unsatisfied customer 🖕

I recently purchased a used 2007 Edge with 112k miles. It had a minor vibration and it was found to have a bad right front CV joint. that eliminated a majority of the vibration. I have since been hearing a squeaking noise on the first acceleration of the day. I suspected a carrier bearing, but after reading these issues here I see it may be a bigger issue. In the service history report, it shows a seal replacement service. I will be Giving my car an inspection of the areas listed by the previous comments. I want to catch it early to minimize extensiveness.

I have a 2008 Ford Edge with 133,000 on it. Recently been experiencing instances where the car seems to shift 'hard', you can feel almost a lurch when excelerating. Thought that there was an issue with the transmission, but over the past few days have noticed a dark brown fluid under the car in the driveway. The fluid appears to be coming from the PTU but it's a little hard to actually tell. We've done some research and the fluid seems to be consistent with other Ford driver's that have experienced this issue in the past. Haven't had this looked at my a mechanic yet, but wanted to chime in just in case this was still a live thread!

Brought it to my mechanic for an oil change yesterday and asked him to look for the source of the leak. He said it wasn't a motor oil leak, but instead the PTU is leaking. Looked under the vehicle today and there's black fluid all over the undercarriage. Have an appointment tomorrow morning at the service department of the Ford dealer where I bought the car. I bought it used with 73,000 miles on it and sure enough 15,000 miles later it left my fiance and my 5 month old daughter and I stranded on the side of the road in 110 degree arizona heat. First I noticed the car was running slightly rough at idile but it wasnt enough to be concerned about. Upon driving 2 miles down the road the navigation display screen shut off and then immediatly after the sensor notifications were going haywire. The odometer screen read CHECK BRAKING SYSTEM and kept flashing between that and LOW TIRE PRESSURE. The motor started to run extremely rough and I pulled off to the side of the road. The rpm and mph needles went dead as well. After I stopped thats when I noticed smoke comming from under the hood. Fearing the worst I immediately shut off the vehichle and opened the hood. Upon inspection I noticed the smoke was pouring from the alternator. I tried to start the vehicle again for further inspection but it was COMPLETELY dead. So therefore we caught a ride home and had it towed to a dealership. Before this all happened the car started having more frequent transmission problems including: slamming into reverse, loss of torque while driving, and of course hard downshift gear transitions. Also ive had to replace 2 rear bulb light connectors because BOTH went out at the same time. Of course upon inspection they seemed to be BADLY melted and deformed. One week later the passenger rear tail light went out AGAIN. Someone needs to do something about these issues immidiately. This vehicle model is EXTREMELY unsafe.

I'm not on to usually complain. I know parts do fail and things aren't always perfect but come on Ford! My wife and I have a 2015 edge with 11,000 miles, it's now at the shop for the second time in 1,000 miles to get ptu seals replaced. maybe this time the problem will be fixed.... Im doubt full. Service department acts as if it's no big deal "it's under warranty" they say. well what about at 61,000 miles it's no longer under warranty then. The track record I now have shows by then Ford will have to replace the seals 50 times? Shame on Ford for not figuring out a solution to an on going problem

I took my 2007 Ford Edge to be checked out May 17th 2016 it was making a lot of noises and swaying.so The dealer said that it had a bad PTU left front axle rare right hub right front center beam bearing front sway bars and Link all this was over $3000.00 in repairs. So I told him I don't have $3,000 right now what could I get fix to keep the car on the road until I get the rest of the money repairs? He said you need to get your PTU and the left front axle done right away so I said okay so on the 20th Friday I was at Wawa to get a cup of coffee before I go into work. Got my coffee put my keys in the ignition but battery lights went on and it slowly died I called Triple A they came and told me this might be a bad starter but they'll take me to work because I work 11 to 7 at night thank God I was at Wawa I could have been stranded anywhere. morning my co-workers took me back to my vehicle I went to Pep Boys which was right down the road and they had took my vehicle to the shop and said that it was a bad belt the top on the alternator that kills my battery so I had to buy a belt and a new battery. at that moment I was very annoyed with the dealership cause I had taking the car in to be checked out and the battery could have been saved if they would have just told me I had a bad belt on my alternator I could have been anywhere and the car stopped running I didn't have to be at Wawa. so I took my car back to the dealership on May 31st to get the PTU done and the axle as recommended by the the service technician in parts. on May 31st the next morning I was called by the dealership and told that my vehicle is ready to be picked up and it's running like new and I said to him I said that was fast he said I would technician worked on it all night I said okay I said can you wait until Friday he said sure. battery light come on and it just wouldn't start so I called Triple-A and the guy said it seems like you have a bad start starter or something like that so the next morning I came back to my vehicle and it was taken to Pep Boys and the guy told me that the belt on the alternator had talked and that it killed my battery so I had to buy a new battery and a belt for the alternator so during that time I took my vehicle to the dealership to get fixed on May 31st 2016 and called me the next day and say Priscilla your vehicle is all fixing his driving just like me I said that was fast he said oh yeah my technician worked on it all night I said okay can you wait until Friday and I'll come and pick it up so for the front axle to be done and the PTU was 2214.00 he gave me a discount of $100 it was going to be originally 2315.00 approximately so I went and pick up my vehicle and then when I was driving up the road the car was making the same noise doing the same thing and everything I brought it back to the dealer straight away and I told him I need a technician I Can't Describe what's going on is the same problem that I had when I brought it in I need a technician or mechanic to go with me and we can drive in the car and he can tell you what's going on so they had a technician drive with me in the vehicle and the vehicle start that grinding noise in the rough like them the wheel the front wheel was skipping it was a rough drive so I went back to the dealer and a mechanic was telling him what it seems like there a passenger side Hub and other sound I don't know what it is but it might be electrical the time David said it says something misfiring and he said yeah it could be but we have to check it out to be for sure so he told me bring it back on Monday and we can check it out and see what's going on so I said okay I'll try to bring it back Monday so I'm on my way back to my jobs. so Saturday morning I couldn't stand it no more coming from one of my clients I took it to a mechanic and he was able to fix most of the work in less than three hours but the other part which was the center being the bearing bar or whatever it's called that goes into the PTU he had to order it and it was the item that was still making a grinding noise and then he asked me how come they put a bad sensor being into a brand new PTU I said I don't know but that my car is running much better would just the sway bar links and right sway links he added and they were going to say is electrical problem maybe or a hub wrong it was going to get me in there and just yank my chain some more.

You should also look into the problem that has been widely reported with Edge owners for the TSS and OSS sensors. Not safe when you're driving down the freeway at 70 mph and the speedometer, odometer and computer turns off and you can't accelerate. If Ford doesn't recall this, someone is going to get seriously injured! My vehicle is going to the shop for the second time in a week -- just paid over $1,000 to get these sensors replaced. Shame on Ford.

I have a 2008 Ford Edge bought new at dealership and they have done all work on transmission issues. I have experienced transmission issues and leaks starting in 2010. Since then I have replaced the transmission - replaced the PTU twice and potentially am facing replacement now with a 5th transmission seal leak fix. Two of the five current leaks replaced on the transmission were from TSB's from FORD. The other three were leaks that were reoccuring. The Tourque Converter was fixed under the warranty of the last transmission/PTU replacement and the warranty expired in March 2016. The leak was brough into the shop on Jan. 2016. Each time my transmission/PTU and most recently Tourque Converter was replaced 1/2016 a previously fixed a leak occured within 3 months of the transmission being worked on. This last one currently has put me in on April of 2016 wth another leak. They now tell me that my warranty on the transmission is up by 1 month and won't cover it. This is the 5th leak in transmission seals. The PTU has been repaired twice and maybe potentially now a third is needed as they tell me that if it's a leak it's $1,500 and if a new PTU $2,500. They don't know until they have it all apart. The dealership told me to call Corporate and I've called corporate 3 times and they are not any help. "Your warranty is expired - we can't do anything". Three staff at the dealership have advised me to get rid of the car. The car is paid off and I'm not in a place to do this.

Took my 2013 Ford Edge SEL in for annual inspection and an oil change (vehicle has approximately 58K miles) and was told that when they were inspecting the vehicle, the found the PTU was "still leaking". I had never been made aware of this, and the mechanic even admitted he had my Edge confused with another one in the shop previously. I was then told that my vehicle did in fact have a leaking PTU and it would have to be replaced, but that it may not be covered under warranty if all four of my tires didn't have the same circumference. After anxiously waiting for the mechanic to complete a test drive and the measurements, I was told in fact that two of my tires were one circumference and the other two were another measurement. They are replacing it but I have been told that they are blaming the difference in the tire circumference on the malfunction. The service writer told me there could be no more than 1/4 inch, but our tires measured 1/2 inch different. The issue at hand now becomes having to possibly replace the tires so as to not have this happen again (and of course the dealer has all four tires in stock at a low, low price)--keep in mind this is the second set of tires--how is it that the original tires maintained the same circumference for the first two years of ownership?? Could it be that the PTU was bad all along and that's what caused two sets of tires to wear faster than normal?? In addition, we have heard a grinding noise at acceleration for the last few months.

Bought a 2012 Ford Edge from Two Rivers Ford in Mt. Juliet, Tn. that was a used certified car with about 15 thousand miles. Had the oil changed three times but on the third time the mechanic told me I had a leaking axle seal and he recommended I take it to a dealer and get repaired. Car now has 21 thousand miles and this is very disappointing as the car is like new was going to be my last vehicle as I am 76 years old. Took it to a dealer Miracle Ford in Gallatin, Tn. and they inspected and confirmed I need new axle seals. Parts have been on order for a week and I have heard nothing from them. I plan on taking a vacation next month and will need to have this issue taken care of before then

But the PTU has been leaking since. Ford advises to replace at around 2 grand. Also, they said it looked like someone else tried to work on it. Silicon and evidence of bolt wear etc. Car is great but at wits end here. $3,300 for trans and now $2,000 for PTU? Ford needs to step up to the plate on the PTU issue.

Told them I would do it towards the end of the month. But I wanted to see if this was a common problem. Apparently it is! Not a happy owner right now. I agree 100% with the other person who stated an investigation needs to be kicked off for the sensor problems with the 2008 Ford Edge. These are by far an even more dangerous scenario than the PTO/PTU failures. The sensors issues are extremely dangerous when they occur in normal, every day living scenarios. I believe that someone is going to killed someday because of the sensors issues failures. TALK ABOUT A SAFETY CONCERN! They are expensive to fix, too. These issues and the lack of proper failure warning are design flaws, plain and simple. It is alarming that Ford Corporate's current choice is to turn a blind-eye and death-ear to these major product design and test failures. Very disappointing.

Have an 08 Lincoln MKX, with 80k mileage. Just had a traumatic electrical failure...the gauges quit, then oddly the stereo/nav/bluetooth displayed "contact dealer" and the speakers blared static, while the dashboard light for airbag error, and the console mounted passenger airbag off error warning lights started turning on, in random non-sequential order, while the doors were locking and unlocking, followed by CHECK TIRE PRESSURE, and CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM, on the message center. The exterior lighting quit working including brake lights, tail lights, and turn signals. I restarted a half a dozen times after I got it off the road. Many times the charging system warning lamp illuminated on restart, while every electronic on the car said to contact dealer for the failure, and the vehicle sounded funny and drove oddly when I would try to move it - Now I find out it is the Turbine Output Shaft Speed Sensors.

Seriously this is a golden class action. Who the hell designs a car that can cause such catastrophic electrical failure because the transmission is straining?

I took the car for tires and tire shop told me they thought my PTU was cracked due to leaking. Flex had 89,800. This was in January of 2016. I took the car to Ford Service who told me my PTU needed to be replaced at 2500-3,000.00!! I have been driving the car since without replacement. I called around because it sounded like BS. A transmission shop used in the past said to drive it until it was grinding and you couldn't stand the noise. They said they have replaced at least 20 PTUs in the Flex and Edge. They will charge $1,500.00. And so I have been driving it since Jan. 2016. It's starting to smell again and the car seems a bit wobbly (could be the roads?) but otherwise, it's been ok. We are scheduled to replace PTU first week in August though.

2013 Ford Edge AWD with 72,000 miles. Last week family member had emergency bypass surgery 600 miles away. Drove there and back, 8 hours each way, returning two days ago. Yesterday I thought I smelled burning oil like dripping oil on exhaust. Assumed it was my wife's car as it is older and she returned from the same trip. This morning wife sends me a message showing fluid on the floor of the garage after I drove to work. Checked and appears fluid is coming from the top of the PTU although no fluid on the ground where I park my car at work. Wondering if all the fluid is gone or only some leaking from vent. Pisses me off that I thought about renting a car before the trip rather than driving my car. Asswipes at Ford in Orlando, FL, are not even calling me back about an appointment after leaving 2 messages with the service manager. Left the car in place until I can figure out what to do about the fluid. This is now the second item with this car that Ford acts like nothing is wrong and does not issue a recall. The first was a drivers side door lock switch failure 7 months ago. Told by Ford that it was not on a recall therefore I needed to pay to have it fixed. Did the repair myself. I worked for GM for years and after driving an Edge for nearly a year as a rental thought I would try a Ford. What really aggravates me is when I was considering purchasing the car I really did not want AWD but wanted the color. Seems I should have listened to my gut. Ford, if you are reading this you suck! Shame on you for having this issue for what appears to be years and continuing to use this design. As far as I am concerned a car with only 73K should not have this issue.

The Ford AWD system is sensitive to differences in tire sizes; including tire wear. Most of the PTU failures may be attributed to this. A difference of 1/32 between front and rear may cause the failure. The best suggestion is to replace all four tires at the same time; do not use the "doughnut" spare. Sell the car to your brother-in-law!

I have a 2013 Ford Edge AWD (in Canada) & the PTU failed at 103000KM. Estimated cost of repair was $2000. I was fortunate that I had Extended Warranty and only had to pay $100. When I question dFord Customer Service advised that the PTU IS DESIGNED TO NEVER NEED SERVICE UNLESS OPERATED IN EXTREME HEAT/SANDY CONDITIONS. There is no drain plug to drain and replace the fluid which is the same fluid that is in the rear differential. One dealer told me that this issue affects their SUV's with AWD. My wife has a 2015 Escape and was told that Ford has a lifetime warranty on the Escape PTU's. I plan on following up on this. The $100 is not going to break me but the principal of the lack of concern/response from Ford tricks me off.

2007 Ford Edge is having the same issues. No leaking yet, but jerking into gear. My other problem is that the air conditioning has had one issue after the other. Started leaking into the blower and then onto the floor, both passenger and drivers side. Had to replace the blower motor because wherever it is leaking from destroyed it. Had the problem fixed, so I thought and a couple a month later, it has begun leaking again. It is very disappointing and frustrating with this heatwave got no on and trying to me my 10 month old grandson from melting in the back seat. If anyone has any solutions or more info on why this is happening and what I can do ...please please let me know. I am continuing to have to put money into this and now I am worried about the PTU problem I keep reading about. I have heard that it is not a recall matter, but it seems to me THAT all these same problems going on , it should be a recall.

I will never buy another Ford again, I'm sure the other Mfgs are the same, but they just leave a very bad taste in my mouth, you pay $40K for a car and they have flaws that they don't step up and fix. I bought a 2013 AWD Ford Edge last year used. I had a warranty on the power train up until 60k miles. A few months after I bought my car it started "clunking" when I would turn and it was whining when I was driving fast, etc. Took my Edge to a Ford dealership to be told that they didn't know what was wrong with it and basically they could not help me. Problem kept getting worse and a month ago I took it to another licensed mechanic. He told me that I just needed "a little fluid" in my "clutch reservoir" and that if the whining didn't bother me I shouldn't worry about it. Uhm, obviously it did bother me if I was trying to get the problem fixed. Anyways, two weeks ago my PTU went out, all of my fluid was drained and it completely destroyed parts in my car. The local Ford dealership told me they would try and file it under a "Good Samaritan" Warranty that Ford offers considering my mileage as of the day it (officially) tore up was 60,500... Ford denied me because, among other reasons, I had not owned a previous Ford vehicle. I am a 20 year old nursing student and I am getting married in September-- I do not have the time, money, or patience to deal with the ignorance and lack of responsibility I have been shown over this issue. I wrote a check yesterday for $1,716.92 to replace a PTU that should have (never torn up in the first place) been covered under warranty a YEAR ago when Ford told me they did not know what was wrong with my car. I am disgusted.

Almost caused accidents at least 3 times called Ford and was told theres no recall cause it's not a safety issue. I replaced the output speed sensor now the car only goes in reverse. Meaning in reverse, drive, & low gear they all go backward (reverse) took transmission a part again and found that the connection to another sensor wires had just broke off clip. Not even sure if this is the problem or not and of course Ford takes no responsibility for any inconvenience this has caused or take into consideration the danger this puts my family in

2011 Ford Edge SEL AWD. The vehicle is leaking fluid under the transmission and PTU transfer case. This past week on Monday 8/8/16 I noticed a loud whining noise upon accelerating from a stop. The noise derived from the front end of the car. I also noticed a slight metal rattle noise when slowing to a stop. I took the car to a mechanic and found that the transfer case is failing. After researching this issue, I am finding that the PTU failure is VERY common in a high volume of Ford AWD vehicles. Ford is telling me I will need to pay $1800+ to replace the unit, and private mechanics are recommending I install a new transmission and PTU unit altogether as the faulty unit may have caused damage to the transmission as well. Very frustrating.

Just had my 2011 Ford Flex AWS with Ecoboost (116000+ miles) in the shop for the PTU three weeks ago. It took them over week and 1600 dollars. I was driving last night 345 miles from home when it started feeling like I was riding on the bumps on the side of the freeway so I moved over but it continued. As I went to pull of to the right shoulder the check engine light started flashing. I stopped turned it off and the same smell as before I got the PTU replaced was back and strong. I looked under the hood it smelt too. After sitting for a few minutes the smell was gone but my car would not start. I had it towed to the closest dealership. I waiting for Monday to see what they say. I did not mention I just had the PTU replaced in fear they would say it was not it. So monday when they call me if they say that is the problem I will be going to the dealership asking that it gets repaired, brought to me at my home, the cost of the hotel I had to stay in, and a rent a car. I will keep everyone posted on what they say. I do think there should be a class action suite against ford.

I am having an issue with a bad PTU on my 2008 ford Edge AWD. It currently has 86000 mile on it. I purchased it new in August 2008. I had it inspected at Meineke on 9/10/2016 and the mechanic showed me that the unit was leaking badly. He stated that almost every Edge that has come into his shop has had the same problem with the PTU. He stated that the cars either have a new PTU or its leaking and needs repair. I was quoted a price of $1665.00 to replace the unit since he claimed that metal filings were in the leaking oil. I am so disappointed to find on the internet that so many people are having the same problem with this car and Ford is not willing to help at all.

3 months ago, when power train warranty was still in effect, engine light was diagnosed as a gas tank sensor. In reality it was the PTU which went out and cost 1600 dollars to replace. Once replaced engine light ceased to be on or a problem. A proper diagnoses the first time would have been under warranty!

Since I had an issue with an earlier model AWD Ford Vehicle, I requested that my dealership check the fluid level in my 2010 Ford Edge AWD PTU at 55,000 mi. The dealership said it wasn't necessary. I again requested that it be checked at 58,000 mi. with the same response. When the PTU failed at 60,000 mi I was extremely upset and contacted Ford. They replaced it for $100. I was very fortunate to have the experience that I did considering all the horror stories that I have read. I now regularly change the oil in my PTU every 5000 mi myself and had no further issues. 110,000 miles and going strong.

The same failure, leaking and noise is happening again at 116000 miles. None of my local dealers want to help and Ford Customer service isn't much help either. Two days ago, I brought my 2008 Ford Edge Limited AWD in for the gas tank recall. During an inspection of my car for this recall it was discovered by the technician that the PTU was leaking. I am currently having the car inspected by my mechanic for the leak. But from what I am reading it is a very common problem with these cars. So it looks like a repair is going to be in order. NOT looking forward to this bill since I just had to replace the water pump which is a major job!!!

I have a 2014 Ford Flex that has been babied and serviced regularly. On 8/2/16, I took it in for it's regular service at 62,993 miles. The dealer found a "small leak" in the PTU. I told them I would gladly pay them to fix the leak that day because my family (myself, my husband & 3 young daughters) was going on a long trip and I didn't want anything to go wrong. The dealer assured me, several times, that the leak was tiny and we could fix it at the next service. On 9/2/2016 I was driving 80mph down the highway and my car started stuttering and then shut down completely. I heard the rear drive line break. Got out, looked under my car to find flames, caused from PTU fluid leaking onto the exhaust. Luckily no one was hurt. I have been without a car for 2 weeks and now it sounds like I am looking at $7500 worth of damages. I am FURIOUS and Ford won't do anything since I am out of my powertrain warranty. This car is 2 years old & has been kept immaculate the whole time. Please help me fight Ford on this, I am at a loss.

I took it to Dunn tire on 6/4/16 and he check and said tires were good that the noise was in the front differential I would need to take it to the manufacturer. I called ford and set an appointment. 2013 Ford Explorer Limited with 70,000 miles. My PTU failed and the only reason I knew was it was making a weird noise. I had no leaks or other way to know. My repair insurance required it to be opened and broken down which is how we found out what it failed. The fluid inside the sealed non-leaking unit had turned to sludge and everything was burning out. My repair insurance (Endurance) is refusing to cover the repair because the fluid inside had turned to sludge but I had no way to know the sealed unit was going bad and it had no leaks. This is going to cost me $1000 for the unit and $300 for the labor. The repair shop is giving us a break because they feel bad we got screwed by our repair insurance company.

Is there actually going to be any lawsuit regarding this? I have 3 mechanic shops that have been involved, pictures of the inside of the PTU that shows it appears there wasn't enough lubricant in it to begin with. If my vehicle was under a load there was just a hum from the PTU, but when the load was taken off and the vehicle raised it sounded like it was going to shake and explode off the vehicle. I had NO leaks. It's a sealed unit, there is no excuse for what occurred than it's a defective part. They don't even sell a rebuild kit, you have to replace it.

Really Ford, we pay tons of money for extended years of payments to afford buying these vehicles! It's time to step up and handle the issues for your comstomers!!

2008 FORD Edge AWD. Started making a slight grinding sound at about 150,000 miles. Changed the fluid in the case unit myself. Found some metal
flake particles in the old fluid.
Installed new fluid in the PTU.
Car ran fine for about 4 weeks. Started noticing a squeaking sound that sounded like a bad shock. Took the car to the dealer to look it over and $95.00 later they told me that the PTU was bad and it would cost $2,300 to replace it.
Car drives fine no power loss on the front or rear drive. Just a squeaking sound when the car takes a slight dip or turns to the left.
Took car home and jacked up the car to check it out myself.
No leaks, no metal powder by the seal or shaft ends. Nothings.
Checked CV drive shaft gear backlash seems normal.
Think I'll ride this one out.

I just had the PTU in my 2010 Ford Edge Limited replaced 3 days ago at 54,000 miles. The cost of the repair was about $1800. What is frustrating to me is the fact that I took the vehicle to the dealer about three months ago because I was hearing an unsettling intermittent squealing sound. We couldn't reproduce the sound while at the dealer service department. I felt that I was treated as though I might be imagining the problem. I was assured that the car was fine. If there is a history of this problem, I wonder why they did not take a look at the PTU to see if it had a problem.

I own a 2008 Ford Edge, which I recently took to a Ford service shop for a fuel tank safety recall. They informed me I have a leaking PTU that would cost $1040 to replace. After reading about the numerous PTU issues on the Ford Forum, it's clear Ford needs to cover this recurring problem as it’s a safety issue b/c the AWD fails when the PTU fails.

I own a 2014 Lincoln MKX, The dealer repair shop just called me and said that the PTU Unit is leaking and that they need to order one to replace it. This is the 2ND PTU Unit replacement on this vehicle in less than 6,000 miles! Still under warranty, but how often will this happen? I think the Company has a REAL problem - hope they continue to cover the expense even after the warranty has depleted!

We just bought a 2013 Ford Edge Sport with 22,000 miles last month. Started smelling a burning oil smell through the ventilation. After googling power train warranty from Ford, I noticed PTU popped up as it being a problem. I called Ford and made an appointment. Took the Edge on and as the female service writer of the power train warranty would cover the PTU of there was an issue. She stayed that I did not have a warrany, as I stated the bumper to bumper expired last month, but still have the power train warranty. She stated they will have to what parts are covered. I told her are you kidding me. Hours later I was advised that the PTU was shot and I was SOL. I will never buy a Ford ever again. I have a 2007 Ford F-150 with the 5.4 nightmare. I should have learned my lesson not to buy a Ford again, but I thought I would try again, boy was I wrong. Ford does nothing for there horrible engineering flaws. FU Ford

I have a 2007 Ford Edge. The ODO Data Error message displays, odometer stops working, wrench light illuminates and as far as I push on the gas petal, nothing but engine ramps up like its in high gear. Car instantly will not go. I attempted to put into park and it sounded and felt as if the transmission was about to fall out from the car. Very hard thump sound when I did get it to shift. When I placed back into Drive, there was a short delay before the transmission actually shifted and again, it sounded as if the entire thing was about to fall out from under the car. Next, when I attempted to accelerate on the gas, no movement, but the engine was clearly running as the RPMs showed. Eventally, after holding down the gas petal to the floor for a few seconds, the car shifted and began to drive normally again.

I have a 2010 Ford Edge SEL AWD. I am having the same problem with the black grease leakage and the propane like smell. The problem started at 110,000 miles. I took the vehicle in and the dealer told me that it was the PTU. I could not afford to fix it. I had them fill the case with whatever the grease was. They showed me that the grease was coming out of the vent. There is no way to flush the system because it is a closed/sealed unit. The problem persisted I have 133,000 miles on the car now. I am now starting to experience jumps on acceleration. I am sure it is the PTU. The dealer told me that later units allowed for flushing. But the one on my car does not. I know I'm going to have to replace it but based on what I have read it is a recurring problem even with the replacement units. So I am going to drive this vehicle until the point of total failure. This is definitely an engineering or product quality issue and should be addressed by the manufacturer.

Last week it was back in the shop because of a horrendous smell coming from the vehicle. I've had 3 different smells, an exhaust smell (sulfur), a burning oil smell and a burning smell because of the under body anti rust that was over sprayed onto the hot surfaces. Last week the Ford dealership replaced the PTU. I was told it stunk their entire workshop and offices out. God knows what toxins have been flooding into the cabin as I drive my kids around. I have been driving it over the weekend and the smell is back. This is absolutely ridiculous. At the moment it's under warranty but not for long. So my 2013 Ford Edge SEL AWD has been leaking this blackish oil for a little while now and ive had this smell in the cabin like burning oil (noticed it when I first got the car used over a year ago but has been getting worse) (Maybe that's why someone was selling it?). Anyway, I recently had an oil change done so I went back to see if maybe it was a leaking seal or something. They said my oil was fine and that the thick black metallic oil dripping is coming from my gear box and that I should get that checked right away.

I brought it to a mechanic and he called me the next day saying that I needed a new transfer case (or PTU power transfer unit). Apparently it controls the all-wheel drive aspect of my car and he told me this is very common in similar Fords with AWD. The oil heats up and has no venting hole and gets spewed out somehow and it looses oil until it dries up and your shit out of luck. That spewing hot oil is what was causing the bad smell in the cabin. Apparently there’s no fix to it or aftermarket product available so he would have to order the part from Ford and it would cost me just under 2000$ to fix. I told him to hold off and made some calls and research.

Apparently, this has been happening for quite a while now….

I called Ford and booked an appointment to get my PTU changed. I found out today that luckily this is covered under the power train warranty (less than 100,000km/5 yr). But what gets me is the fact that this seems to be a recurring problem since it’s an engineering malfunction and not to a specific part so it will happen again. No recall on this.

I just hope they realized this is serious issue and something must be done about it. Once I get my car back, I might be looking switch and staying away from Ford. Its a shame, I really enjoy my Edge.

I tried to suck the oil out using a pump, but could not get anything. Top it up with specified gear oil. It took 10 fl oz. The PTU only holds 12 fl oz. when dry. Can 2 fl oz of old original gear-oil keep in from failing? So far it has, but I'm sure the PTU is damaged and its day are numbered.

I have a 2010 Edge that I purchased almost 4 years ago (May 2013). A short time after I bought it we noticed that occasionally it would experience a "hard shift". I brought it to a dealer where they charged me well over $100 to check it out and tell me they couldn't find anything. A few months later, it happened again so I took it to a different dealer, explained my frustration with the first dealer and had them check it out. They too, found nothing, charged me over $100 and told me to come back while it was doing it. Really??? I told them I was concerned that after the warantee ran out that a problem would surface. Sure enough, I am smelling a burnt chemical smell and see a puddle of dark brown/black liquid under center of the car while in garage. This car has been extremely well maintained and treated properly. I was hoping to keep this car a few more years. Now what?

2008 Ford Edge - I noticed a fowl oil burning smell several years ago it was a PTU seal leak on passenger side that cost me about $500.00 + tax to repair. A short time later I noticed the same smell and suspected the mechanic missed something and expected a warranty repair. Turned out to be a new seal leak .. this time on the drivers side that cost me another $500.00 + tax. OK ... problem solved right!? No..... having problems with it again and told the PTU needs to be replaced and if I keep driving it .... I'm warned could damage and possibly need to rebuild my transmission. What does a PTU cost here in Canada? Checked with FORD a week ago and told a new PTU costs $1200.00 give or take plus labour (I'm told is 7 hrs approx of work). After spending about $1000.00 + in repairs and now needing to replace the PTU + labour the total surrounding a PTU only is coming to astounding figure of $3200.00 for one part that essentially, without it, the vehicle cannot function.

As this seems to be one of the most common of issues with FORD AWD vehicles and understandable wear and tear as fair, FORD should at the very least be responsible for the part cost of replacing the PTU.

Same problem(s) as mentioned above. Bought the vehicle used (80K miles) from a local dealer six months ago. 2007 Ford Edge AWD SEL. Pretty disappointed as this is the second issue in 3 months. First it was the two transmission sensors (Speed output and Turbine speed) and now it appears to be the PTU and accompanying seals and/or gaskets. Again, pretty disappointed. If this is a known issue, the consumer should NOT be held responsible. FORD MUST stand by their product. -- JMS

On top of that I'm being told my tires which I purchased all new in 2014, Vehicle in in 2013 which I'm still making payments on. This has come at a horrible time as I've been struggling with debt all year. I find hope in the fact I'm not the only one who has experienced this issue and that others have reached out to Ford/Lincoln for some type of acknowledgement, be it a recall of some type, improvements in the technology something. 2011 Ford Edge AWD Limited: I took my car in for brake recall and advised that I wanted them to check over the car really well because my warranty was going to expire. That was at 72,000 miles. I drove it to Florida fro Illinois and back, to discover a leak in my garage. A thick black fluid. Like everyone else, I took it back to the dealer and they discovered two issues. 1. PTU leak and 2. High pressure hose power steering leak. I was now at 78,000 with no warranty. My power train ended at 60,000. I've been advised that it would be 1300.00 for the PTU and 500 for the power steering leak. I called Ford to see if they could assist, they entered my complaint and sent it back to the dealer. The dealer entered in the system that there was nothing they could do to assist and closed the issue. I have yet to have it fixed.

2007 Edge It started with a grinding humming noise while turning mostly. A week later it sounds like a can of bolts knocking around, and that the car is backfiring and jerking. Its extremely loud and scary. We are not going to drive it anymore until we get it to the shop. I'm guessing the PTU is the issue.

PTU starting going out before Christmas. You smelt a burning gas type smell and then started grinding really bad. 52,000 miles on the vehicle and it gets babied. Dealership luckily said it was under warranty still but has had the vehicle for a week now. 2013 FORD EDGE LIMITED. Louisville, Kentucky area.

I have a 2007 Lincoln MKX, I purchased this vehicle used almost 5 yrs ago and have not really had nothing to complain about until now. After owning the vehicle for a few months I noticed a smell in the cabin that was like natural gas or propane, I brought it in for service and was told the ptu had a slight leak but I would have to pay out of pocket because they claim the previous owner already brought it in under the recall. Well the vehicle seemed fine so I rolled the dice-actually the smell went away so I figured all was well. Two weeks ago it started making a hum and then a grinding noise, I thought it was a bad bearing or calliope so I had planned to bring it for service next week. Yesterday the propane smell came back in full force, it nearly choked me. I tried to leave for work this am and the grinding is deafening. Just got the repair estimate-need a new transfer case, $2500 to fix. I love this vehicle and will get the repair done but I'm annoyed that this seems to have been an ongoing issue for years and nothing's being done about it. Hopefully I can get another year out of her after this repair.

2013 Ford Explorer Sport with 90,000 miles and a PTU that is cracked in half. Dealership initially wanted to charge $2600, but so far we have "negotiated" down to $1600. We bought the car used 8 months ago. It doesn't seem right that there are this many issues and they continue to sell the vehicles with no indication of an issue. I also found a form that I signed at 1:00 in the morning after dealing with finance that says I would not participate in any class action lawsuit. Seems very fishy to me. Ford put it off on the dealership and the dealership is putting it off on Ford. Lovely.

About 2 months ago I purchase a used 2013 Ford Edge Sport with about 17K miles on it. About a month a ago I began smelling fumes coming through the vents while driving, but particularly at stops. At take off I began hearing a rubbing/grinding sound on the passenger rear. I reported it to the dealer and just took it in on Friday. Clearly they knew about this problem but sold the car to me anyway. Fortunately, and unfortunately, I purchased a bumper to bumper warranty after negotiating a desperate salesman down to cost. Something told me to look into this matter and I stumbled across this class action. Though they are fixing the problem, I can only wonder if it's a permanent fix? I will be monitoring this issue. We should be reimbursed every penny spent on repairs and cost for time.

Of course I am having this problem! Just had my PTU replaced today. Was astonished by this thread as I was simply trying to determine what in the world a PTU was.

So it was replaced, I got my oil changed and was informed I had a leak is how I even knew there was an issue (thanks Jiffy Lube:). Fortunately I have an extended warranty on my 2011 Ford Edge (AWD) so my cost was 100.00 out of pocket (thank goodness).

PTU has gone bad presently at dealer to be fixed. $1810 cost. Ford makes this part almost impossible to get to because of the way it is mount it around the exhaust system.

Like everyone else we are bearing this cost what no assistance from Ford Motor Company we bought a extended Ford ESP Company warranty for 75,000 miles. At 86,000 it goes bad

Apparently there is a technical bulletin out that's talk's about a smell when accelerating. This is one of the symptoms that the unit has when it is going bad.

So our vehicle was not serviced at a Ford dealer it was serviced and never was there any indication that there was a leak of this unit.

So why is it for being sued for a class action suit
